Stafford Liberal Democrats Launch Their "Stop the New M6 Toll" CampaignWritten by Cllr Barry Stamp on Mon 26th Jul 2004 Stafford Liberal Democrat's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Barry Stamp launched the Stafford Constituency "Stop the New M6 Toll" campaign in Penkridge on Saturday. Accompanied by a group of party workers, Barry helped deliver over a thousand leaflets to homes near the existing motorway. The leaflets called on Alistair Darling - the Labour Transport Secretary - to scrap his plans to build a new toll expressway running broadly parallel to the existing road.
"Over the past few days I and other members of the Liberal Democrats in Stafford Constituency have been contacted by local residents who are desperately worried about the Governments proposed new M6 Toll Expressway. It was with this in mind that I decided to back the residents in their fight against these plans. On Saturday I was pleased to launch our campaign to get Alistair Darling and the Labour Government to change their minds. During the morning a group of party workers delivered over a thousand leaflets to homes in Penkridge which stand to be affected if the new road is built. Over the next few days similar deliveries are planned in Acton Trussell, Moss Pit, Burton Manor, Western Downs, Derrington, Doxey, and Creswell. Every leaflet carries a petition which can be returned by Freepost and it is our intention to collect hundreds of signatures which I will then pass on to the department of Transport before the consultation period comes to an end. The petition can also be signed on-line on my own web site www.barrystamp.org. Visitors can also download a petition sheet that can be used to collect signatures from family and friends. A new toll motorway around Stafford, or indeed the earlier plan to widen the road, will devastate the lives of many people living in this area and there is very little time for local residents to fight this proposal," said Barry Stamp.
